W02 The Humble, Magnificent Estey Reed Organ
John Weaver is bringing to the convention from Vermont an 1885 Estey reed organ which was responsible for the building of a church one hundred years ago. It is an amazing story! He will demonstrate its powerful and subtle musical possibilities as a solo instrument and as an accompanying instrument. Flutist Marianne Weaver will join him in arrangements created for this combination.

W05 Finale™ Made Practical for the Church Musician
This introductory workshop will present basic techniques for using Finale™ music notation software for worship bulletins and other common needs of the church musician. This presentation will focus on simple tasks such as entering notes and lyrics, formatting pages, exporting images to word processing software, and other basic features of Finale™. Participants are encouraged to come with questions.

W06 St. Reverbo’s Organ: A Cautionary Tale on Maintaining Your Organ
Are you properly caring for your church’s organ? Do you know what to do when something goes wrong on Sunday morning? This workshop answers these questions and more through a light-hearted fictitious story based on nearly forty years of observation by Mr. Engen. Come find out what maintenance difficulties the fictitious organist encounters in this story and how you can avoid the same problems.

W07 The Marilyn Mason Music Library of Commissioned Organ Music
Marilyn Mason will introduce music from Volume IV of The Marilyn Mason Music Library (MorningStar, 2008). Commissioned composers will include Linker, Hildebrand, Jordon, Cowell, McCreary, and others. The discussion will include performance problems of touch, style, rhetoric, and suggestions on interpretation. If time permits, most of the works will be played by Dr. Mason.

W08 Sacred Piano Music Reading Session
Organists often are required to be pianists too! Piano repertoire for use throughout the various seasons of the church year will be demonstrated at this workshop. The focus will be on arrangements of hymn tunes that can be incorporated as voluntaries for prelude, offering, or at the communion distribution. A variety of composers and publishers will be represented.

W09 Leading Global Song in Worship
With St. Olaf College colleague Dr. David Hagedorn, percussion, John Ferguson will explore techniques for leading a wide variety of ethnic styles of congregational song from the organ. Which styles adapt well to the organ? Which work better at the piano? When not to play at all? How can simple percussion parts enrich the singing experience? In this workshop we will sing and thus explore answers to these questions.

W10 Interpreting the Organ Music of Marcel Dupré
This workshop will explore certain issues involved in the performance of Dupré’s works today. How are we to approach the technical demands of his music, which so often seems to require a transcendental technique? Is Dupré’s substantially neglected music (outside the handful of well-known works), which involves such technical difficulty, worthy of investigation at all? What did Dupré’s musical style bequeath to the oft-played music of his most famous pupils, Alain and Messiaen, and is there anything about their music that we can learn from Dupré’s? What role does the organ itself play in Dupré’s works? Did his fondness for an American aesthetic influence his compositional legacy? This workshop will help organists today interpret and perform Dupré’s music.

W11 The Registration of J. S. Bach’s Organ Works
Learn about historic registration practices for J. S. Bach’s organ works through an introduction to Dr. Faulkner’s new book, The Registration of J. S. Bach’s Organ Works (Wayne Leupold Editions, 2008). This publication offers many primary sources on organ registration in early eighteenth-century central Germany that have not been available in English translation before now. It also provides a comprehensive index of material in primary sources. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the workshop.

W13 Maurice Duruflé: The Man and His Music
The organ and choral compositions of Maurice Duruflé are among the greatest and most frequently performed in the repertoire. This workshop will feature lesser-known aspects of Duruflé’s career, including his role in the plainsong revival, his experience as an orchestral musician, and his view of the Second Vatican Council, along with unpublished photographs from his childhood and young adulthood. A recording will be played of Duruflé’s recently discovered Fugue in C Minor, a masterful Bach-like work from 1928 that remains unpublished.
