We’ll offer many ideas—new and old—of how to promote your chapter events, including the events of the International Year of the Organ, 2008-09, and Organ Spectacular on October 19, 2008. W19 Sibelius™ and Pro Tools™—Software Programs for Recording and Notating Your Music
Robin Hodson from Sibelius/Pro Tools/M-Audio presents an informative session for organists to help take the fear out of using music software. Featured will be Sibelius v5, Pro Tools v7.3 and other instructional and free resources for church musicians. All are welcome, regardless of their experience level.

W20 Juried Papers on Messiaen: Recent Scholarship
In honor of the Messiaen centenary, three twenty-minute papers submitted by young scholars will be presented. These papers were selected by the Committee on Continuing Professional Education, covering such topics as Messiaen’s life, his organ works, and his contributions to the musical world.

W22 Sunday Comes Every Seven Days
Organists working in the church/parish situation require a vast amount of music for a wide variety of services and occasions. Additionally, many do not have easy access to the newest offerings by music publishers or distributors. “Sunday Comes Every Seven Days” will explore this literature, highly accessible to most organists and newly available from a broad spectrum of publishing houses. Samples (both visual and aural) of music will be provided as well as a listing by publisher of the “best of the best” available in 2008.

W23 Sigfrid Karg-Elert: Exploring the Aesthetics of His Organ Music
Commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s death, this workshop will provide an illustrative overview of more than 250 compositions for organ by Karg-Elert. Attention will be directed to the influence of Bach and the extensive use of the German chorale in Karg-Elert’s works. Focusing on the performance and registration of this music, Elke Voelker will draw parallels to Max Reger’s works and relate the important influence of French composers such as Louis Vierne.

W24 Conducting from the Console
This workshop will focus on basic skills needed when conducting from the console. Issues of clarity of gesture, eye contact, and re-voicing will be discussed along with ways to make the singers as secure as possible. Techniques for practicing left hand/right hand coordination will be discussed and demonstrated along with ways to communicate tempo, entrances, dynamic changes, rhythmic energy, and musical line.

W25 Ethnic Percussion in Worship
Do you have percussion instruments sitting around your church and wonder how to play them? Do you have young percussionists making noises on congas, bongos, and djembes, but instead of helping the music sound interesting, the music sounds cluttered? Do you wonder what sorts of rhythms will enhance ethnic pieces? You can get the answers to these questions and hands-on experience with various percussion instruments at this clinic with David Hagedorn, percussion instructor at St. Olaf College.

W26 French and Spanish Baroque Organ Music of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
In this workshop, performance criteria such as ornamentation, notes inégales, fingerings, and character will be discussed, demonstrated, and compared. The music will be analyzed and related to the general musical contemporary background of the time. Workshop attendees are encouraged to perform selections from French and Spanish Baroque repertoire in a master class setting.

W27 Presenting PipeWorks: Preparing for the Future
The workshop will introduce the PipeWorks–Twin Cities program, which brings the pipe organ to young people in grades 4-6 using science, social studies, music lessons, and a demonstration instrument. Building on the AGO national program, the Twin Cities’ PipeWorks program also includes twentieth-century music and social studies lessons, an additional science experiment, several additional teaching aids, and greatly enhanced instructional materials. The workshop will illustrate how the program trains Twin Cities AGO members prior to going into the classroom, describe the two-week classroom program, and feature performance of the demonstration instrument.

W28 Transposition and Modulation — Musicianship and Creativity through Functional Keyboard Skills
Transposition and modulation are among the more challenging keyboard skills that are included in AGO certification exams at several levels. But both are worthwhile, valuable skills to explore in developing musicianship, improving aural imagery, and learning to improvise. In this joint workshop, Dean Billmeyer and Kenneth Grinnell will expand on their articles from The American Organist and present strategies that organists of various skill levels can use. An emphasis will be placed on using transposition and modulation skills to develop one’s musicianship regardless of whether one is preparing for a certification exam.

W29 After the Prelude—Handbells in Worship Leadership
Creativity in worship design can include the use of handbells and chimes in ways you might not have experienced. As long as the ringers will be there, how might they participate in worship leadership besides playing their own literature? You’ll get many pages of handouts for use at home and inspiration for coming up with your own ideas.
