Z12 Sacred Choral Music with Instrumental Accompaniment
This workshop will delve into the varied and rich sacred repertoire for choir with instruments. Collaboration is one of the greatest joys in music and for a choir to work with an instrumentalist, a quartet, a chamber orchestra, a jazz ensemble, or a full orchestra enriches those who participate and those who listen. A wide range of styles and difficulty levels—for both choir and instrumentalist—will be examined and a packet of music will be provided.

Z13 Scandinavian Organ Music
An inventory of trends in the Scandinavian organ landscape, illustrated with recorded examples, will give the listener an opportunity to hear the changing faces of organ building over time, along with music written for specific instruments. Starting with the sixteenth century, we will investigate how organ music in the Nordic countries reflects political developments and significant cultural influences from other European countries. Over time, Scandinavian composers have become more adept at incorporating their native characteristics into their works, creating unique and varied repertoire worth exploring. Handouts including publisher information will get you started on your own Scandinavian musical treasure hunt.

Z19 The Organ Works of Olivier Messiaen: Understanding the Theory Behind the Art
Often feared and revered for their complicated harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic characteristics, the organ works of Messiaen exhibit an astonishing array of organizational techniques, many so original that the composer felt compelled to explain them in texts and prefaces to scores. This workshop will take a quick tour of the many “charms of impossibilities” used in the works from “Le Banquet Céleste” to the “Livre de Saint Sacrement.” Among the topics covered are his famed modes of limited transpositions, Indian and Greek rhythms, Messiaen’s flirtation with total serialist techniques, pervasive use of birdsong, and the concepts of the “communicable language.”
